The SFEQ training program is built on two proven research theories – the optimal and enriched environments. To develop a teenager’s potential in view of the whole person construct – body, mind and spirit - requires a plan of strategy involving two vital conditions - optimal and enriched environments. Optimal environment refers to the best learning condition the young person can possibly have. Research in education believes a student’s environments including family, school, recreation, socialization can all contribute to the success of his/her learning, relationships, and work attitude. Caring parents, competent learning institutes and concerned others are important ingredients to facilitate the success of the child in life’s development such as academics and relationships. If a teenager is growing in these healthy settings he/she would be in the optimal learning environment.
Research on learning from neuroscience reported that an enriched environment is essential to the success of learning in a youngster. They all agree that individual, team, and reflection as means of promoting on-going growth and development. A child in an enriched environment is when he/she is given positive encouragement, caring and non-threatening guidance, activity based learning and healthy relationship. Through these experiences, the child’s neural network can become healthier and stronger. The common complaints of forgetfulness and a weak mind in normal growing teenagers, for instance, can no longer be a problem.
The design of SFEQ curriculum, empowered by these findings, has three basic components to address the criteria of optimal and enriched environments. The delivery system of this innovative program has adopted a 3-C system. (See graph below) The first C is for class. The student will not only learn basic EQ concepts in class but also get team support from facilitator, coach and peers. Since the class design is activity-based, an obvious deviation from regular school operation, life skills acquisition is over the dissemination of knowledge.
The second C is for coaching. This crucial component is distinctive of other training programs because it meets the call for optimal and enriched environments. Every teen is assigned a gender specific coach to help her/him to deal with hurdles in EQ learning. Through coaching, the teen is capable of handling life experiences in a positive, confident and optimistic fashion. A qualified life coach is the teenager’s “best friend” or “confidant” to tackle together life’s issues without fear and intimidation, which is the essence of learning in an enriched environment.
The last C is class for parents. Student’s parents are invited to a monthly seminar to learn about what their children have learned. This opens a door for parents to learn about teenagers’ issues besides getting information of the lesson materials. Many parents have improved better understanding of their children after attending these classes. Their involvement in EQ learning naturally make them an alliance of their child and as a result, an optimal environment is enforced.
